As the oldest formally recognized African American Congregational Church in the world, Dixwell Avenue Congregational United Church of Christ stands firmly in the legacy of liberation, justice, and radical welcome. Rooted in the teachings of Jesus and the prophetic tradition of the Black Church, we affirm that every person is created in the image of God and is beloved beyond measure.
We declare ourselves an Open and Affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ. We joyfully and unequivocally welcome people of every race, ethnicity, age, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, marital status, family structure, physical and mental ability, economic circumstance, incarceration history, immigration status, and faith background into the full life, leadership, and ministry of this church.
We recognize the sacred worth of our LGBTQ+ siblings—including transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive people—and we celebrate their presence, leadership, and gifts among us. We commit to creating a spiritual home where all can worship freely, love openly, and live authentically without fear of judgment or exclusion.
Dixwell UCC was founded in 1820 by a prophetic group of free men/women and formerly enslaved people who refused to let an oppressive regime define the will of God. We acknowledge that churches have too often been complicit in systems of oppression that harm Black, queer, and trans lives. In response, we covenant to be a community of healing and accountability, working to dismantle racism, transphobia, homophobia, and all forms of injustice within and beyond our walls.
At Dixwell UCC, you are invited to come as you are—because you are already loved and worthy. Together, we strive to embody God’s extravagant welcome and to walk humbly in the ways of justice, mercy, and love.
